The romantic Nafplion
The romantic Nafplion – the first capital of the newly established Greek state from 1823 to 1834 – is one of the most popular destinations, both for the beauty of the landscapes it offers, as well as for its picturesque architecture and its Venetian castles.
Landmarks
It owes its name to Nafplio, son of the god Poseidon and Amymone. The emblem of Nafplion is the 999 steps journey leading to the Palamidi Castle. Palamidi, with its long history, was the place where the Greek Revolution’s general Theodoros Kolokotronis was sentenced to death. Standing tall, Palamidi Casle seems to oversee and look after the city even today. At the top of Palamidi, the rocky peninsula of Akronaflia, also known by the Turkish name of Its Kale, stretches.
Another landmark of Nafplion is, though, the Bourtzi fortress built on the islet of Agios Theodoros. During the time of the Venetians, it was connected to Akronafplia with a huge mobile chain that secured the entrance to the port, offering protection to the city from enemy ships.
