The city of the “crazy waters”…
At a very close distance from Athens, just 78 kilometers on the national road, lies the cosmopolitan Chalkida. This city is characterized by the unique phenomenon of its waters moving for six hours from the northern to the southern Euboean gulf, followed by 10 minutes where the waters are stagnant and immediately after starting moving for another six hours in the opposite direction.
The most emblematic point of the city is the “old” bridge on which you can watch this phenomenon of the “crazy waters”. The electronic, sliding, arched bridge of Evripos is a symbol for all the region of Evia.
Chalkida
Chalkida, according to the myth, owes its name to the eponymous daughter of Asopus and Methoni. According to another version, its name derives from the Chalkideans, people who lived on the Manika peninsula in the northwestern part of the city.
The tendency of the inhabitants of Manika to engage in the copper trade contributed to the city taking the name “Chalkis” from the 3rd millennium BC. This, first, city will survive for a millennium and, according to the archaeological excavations carried out, it was a well-organized city with large building blocks, road arteries, large houses, hearths and wells.
